FOMC (Federal Open Market Committee)

All day Wed, 3/18/2026

Overview

The Federal Reserve's monetary policy committee. Meets 8 times per year to set the federal funds rate target range.

Meeting summary (published 2026-04-08)

At the March 17-18, 2026 meeting, the FOMC held the target range at 3-1/2 to 3-3/4 percent. Nearly all members supported the hold; Governor Miran dissented, preferring a 25bp cut. Economic activity was expanding at a solid pace, with Q1 momentum accelerating partly due to the unwinding of the prior quarter's government shutdown. Job gains remained low and the unemployment rate was 4.4%, stable since September 2025 though with some signs of softening. Inflation remained somewhat elevated (January total PCE 2.8%, core 3.1%), with tariffs and Middle East-driven oil price spikes expected to boost near-term inflation. The Committee continued Treasury bill purchases to maintain ample reserves, projected around $3 trillion through September 2026.
